I reconnected with my brother in arms Ern after more than 10 years. Having followed his professional fighting career from overseas, I was happy and curious to receive his teachings at his newly opened gym. With a lifetime spent practicing combat martial arts, I have been taught by senior masters in Hong Kong, Laos, Thailand and Canada. I belonged to 3 fight teams in Muay Thai and Boxing and spent years sparring and cornering fighters at the amateur and professional level.
Though I went to Resolve Martial Arts with the excitement to train with my brother, I never suspected I would be so blown away by the experience. Ern is a master of his craft, who has attained expression of self both in fighting and in teaching, which is extremely rare, especially for his age. Most of my masters being beyond their 60s at the time I started training under them, my standard of practice was always high.On top of this, Ern has a passion for learning which keeps him modern in terms of the approaches chosen, constantly learning and adapting to the ever changing scene of mixed martial arts, muay thai, boxing, grappling, wrestling, strength and conditioning.
Add a bright smile and a generous heart to this intelligence, and you have a coach that prepares a handwritten, tailor-made workout for every person attending his training at every single session. He knows how to pace the session between how much energy you bring on any given day and how to train you without hurting or exhausting you, pushing you beyond your limits, teaching technical skills that are immediately applicable to your path as a martial artist, focusing on one or two shortcomings per workout, and using the latest movement science to add a smart strength and conditioning portion. On top of this, there is a unique opportunity to have a sparring component in the session, with the safety, respect and energy that is so rare to find in martial arts schools worldwide. I truly want to emphasize on that part, as I have been sparring in striking arts since age twelve and have often been confronted to gyms and masters with the wrong sparring culture, as well as the few who do it right. Ern’s peaceful demeanor and smiling energy always help you feel happy and uplifted at every training. You will walk out having overcome yourself, constructively improved on a deficiency, acquired a new technique or drill, and happy and relaxed after every single class.
I give Ern the respect to have applied Bruce Lee’s teachings within our beautiful Hong Kong City, and to be delivering a martial arts education which encourages every being to find a simple yet efficient way to express themselves fully through this physical practice.
His gym is a true gem, as the location is beautiful and well situated in the heart of Wan Chai. I consider it a blessing to share the opportunity to train with him with my network and the patients of my osteopathy practice.
